Merging impressive performance with the allure of open-top driving, the new Audi R8 Spyder can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.6 seconds and its striking design and high-end technologies demonstrate the expertise of the Audi brand.
"With its spontaneous throttle response, quick revving-up and inimitable sound, the 5.2 FSI naturally aspirated engine in the new Audi R8 Spyder delivers undiluted emotion," remarked Dr. -Ing. Stefan Knirsch, Member of the Board of Management for Technicial Development. He added "Compared to the R8 Coupe, the engine sound in the open high-performance sports car now delivers an even more intense experience."
The athletic design includes a lightweight cloth hood that tapers in to two fins which stretch the cloth. The hood can be opened and closed in 20 seconds at speeds up to 50km/h thanks to an electro-hydraulic drive while the rear window, which is sunk into the bulkhead, can be retracted and extended. The vehicle itself weighs just 1,612kg thanks to the newly developed Audi Space Frame, which is made from aluminium and carbon fibre and individual components that are now up to 10% lighter thanks to innovative manufacturing methods.
A naturally aspirated 5.2 litre engine sets the tone in the new Audi R8 Spyder V10. Its roar can be optionally amplified by a sport exhaust system which provides an incredible sound. 540hp of power and 540Nm of torque allows the R8 Spyder to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds on its way to a top speed of 318km/h. Fuel efficiency is also an important issue and technology such as freewheeling mode ensure that the new model is up to 10% more fuel efficient that its predecessor.
Behind this powerful engine the driver electrically controls a seven-speed S tronic with lightning-fast action. A newly designed quattro drive system and a water cooled all-wheel clutch keep you in complete control. The Audi drive select system features an intelligent control system which offers four modes including dynamic and comfort-oriented. The optional R8 performance leather steering wheel provides an additional three driving programs - dry, wet and snow. These programs make the handling even more precise and stable by matching the specific conditions of the road.
The driver has the ability to operate all important functions with the multifunction and satelitte push-buttons without having to take their hands off the steering wheel or their eyes off the road. The full digital Audi virtual cockpit presents rich 3D graphics on a large 12.3 inch screen and, if desired, features a special performance view that includes driving dynamics information. MMI navigation plus with MMI touch features as standard along with belt microphones. These all make it easier for the driver to use natural language voice control.
Brand new technology in the R8 Spyder now makes it possible to display selected information from a smartphone, using Audi smartphone interface, in the Audi virtual cockpit. Audi phone box is also available as an option which allows mobile phones to connect to the car aerial and charge inductively while Audi connect gets the R8 Spyder online via LTE and provides a wide range of services including online media streaming and real-time traffic information. Another highlight inside the vehicle is the Bang & Olufsen Sound System which, for the first time in an Audi, integrates two head restraint loudspeakers into each seat for an excellent audio experience even with the roof down.
The build of the R8 Spyder is of an impressively high standard. Extensively hand built, there is an incredible level of attention to detail. Over and above an extensive range of standard equipment, you will have the option of tailoring the inside and outside of the vehicle to your preferences. Add-on components, such as the front spoiler, the diffuser and the new sideblades are also available in carbon. LED headlights with newly developed laser technology maximise visibility and range for the driver, offering increased safety at night.
