Audi A8 e-tron to arrive with new hybrid engine

Audi is developing a more powerful plug-in hybrid version of its V6 diesel powertrain, and the unit is to appear first in the new A8 e-tron before joining the rest of the range.

The new A8 and its 3.0-litre engine follows the A3 e-tron Sportback, which couples a smaller 1.4-litre unit with an electric motor. The new arrangement will be used to drive Audi's larger saloon, estate and SUV vehicles. The electric motor's size is currently unknown, but Audi has confirmed that the new system will have 368bhp overall and up to 700Nm of torque. The German carmaker has also stated that an all-electric range of 30 miles will be possible.

The incoming e-tron system will be presented at the start of 2015, prior to production and a roll out across the line-up. "The 3.0-litre e-tron will be used in different cars," commented Audi board member Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, The plugin hybrid is an exciting combination."

Clearly, the e-tron arrangement has been designed with flexibility in mind, and the capability to bring low-emissions output to many future models. Dr Hackenberg revealed that the A8 will impress with its cleanliness, commenting: "It will go under the 100g/km barrier, especially in Europe."
