Audi prioritises hybrids for 2020 goal

The head of research and development at Audi has revealed that the brand will focus on making a hybrid version of each key vehicle by 2020. Ulrich Hackenburg has announced the plans and the development of two new plug-in hybrid vehicle families.

The news that Hybrids will be prioritised over conventionally-powered models came at the launch of the A3 Sportback e-tron plug-in hybrid car. Future Audi vehicles of a similar size will be based on the MQB architecture and available with a power system similar to the e-tron.

The combination of a 1.4-litre petrol engine, electric motor and exclusively-made six-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox will maintain the confidence and efficient motoring Audi is renowned for.

There is also the potential for larger four-wheel drive models to stand on the MLB-Evo platform, with the petrol-electric hybrid system slightly rearranged. Hackenburg has also suggested that quattro versions are possible in future.

Upcoming e-tron versions of the A8 and Audi Q7 have already been announced, with launch dates and full specifications to be confirmed.
